CHARLIE OLSON- Sam Houston State University

In his first season with the Sam Houston volleyball program, assistant coach Charlie Olson helped direct the Bearkats to 18 victories and the Bearkats’ eighth consecutive Southland Conference tournament appearance.
Olson has joined the Sam Houston athletic staff in March 3, 2014. His responsibilities include recruiting, match statistics, video breakdown and distribution, individual sessions, and practice competition.
He previously served as volunteer assistant for the University of Tennessee volleyball program. Olson’s accomplishments with the Vols included the training of with the squad including training of All-American Libero, Ellen Mullins.
Olson has been involved in playing and coaching volleyball for the past 18 years in California, Idaho, Arizona, Virginia and Tennessee.
He has coached junior since 2005 at Desert Sports, Tidewater, Beach Elite and Coastal Virginia volleyball clubs. He was also involved with various high schools including helping lead the Floyd E. Kellam Knight’s to a third-straight AAA Virginia High School State Title as co-head Coach. Olson earned “Virginia State AAA Coach of the Year” honors in 2012.
While attending California State University, Chico, Olson played on the men’s club volleyball team from 2000-2004. He served as floor captain during his last two years at Chico, and during his senior year, earned All-America honors at the national tournament as a middle blocker.
Olson was the assistant coach of the women’s club volleyball team at Chico State for two seasons.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
After college, Olson was selected to play for Team USA which comprised of nine other men in the U.S. Virgin Islands Invitational for two years in a row in 2004 and 2005.
Olson began playing volleyball at Campolindo High School in Moraga, Calif., spending one year on junior varsity and three years on the varsity squad as a middle blocker.
During his senior year in 1999, Olson was named captain and led his team to an undefeated regular season in the TCAL, and a win at the North Coast Championships while also receiving first-team all-league and most valuable player honors.

After playing for Ouachita Volleyball for four years, Faith Avalos joined the Tigers as the assistant coach to start the 2015 season. Coach Avalos graduated from Ouachita in the spring of 2014 with a degree in Secondary Education and History and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Special Education.
As the assistant her responsibilities include planning and implementing practices and workouts, game preparation, and recruiting. She hopes to get certified as a strength and conditioning coach after she finishes her master’s degree in May of 2016.Coach Avalos also serves as the Student-Athlete Academic Coordinator. This job provides her with the opportunity to help student-athletes as they work to be successful in the classroom. She is in charge of organizing and supervising study hall for athletes, as well as directing student-athletes to various tutoring opportunities.
